LINDEN — C. Richard Helms, 48, funeral director of Helms Funeral Home, died of a heart attack at 8:30 p.m. Saturday in Home Hospital at Lafayette. He was a resident of Linden since 1955 and owned a restaurant here for three years before starting the Helms Funeral Home in 1959. He was graduated from Indiana College of Mortuary Science in 1951. He was a medic in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Mr. Helms was a member of the Elks Club of Crawfordsville, a member of the Indianapolis Valley Scottish Rite, Romney Lions Club, secretary-treasurer of Linden Cemetery Association, I&R representative for Boy Scouts, and governor of the Lew Wallace District, member of Masonic Lodge 697, OES Chapter 244, Linden Businessman's Club and Linden Baptist Church. He was born in New York on Jan. 29, 1923, a son of Charles V. and Hester Faudree Helms. On Nov. 23, 1950, he was married to Harriett Graham at Rochester, Ind. His mother and wife survive. Also surviving are a son, Gordon at home; a brother, Kenneth of Dayton, Ohio; and a half-sister, Mrs. Richard Beckwith of Quoque, N.Y. Services for Mr. Helms will be conducted at 10:30 Wednesday at Helms Funeral Home with Rev. Broten Martin and Rev. Leon Ellis officiating. Burial will be in Linden Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 2 p.m. Tuesday.
